# Set up Arlo (optional)

> Add Arlo, the optional AI receptionist, to answer the calls your team can't get to. It takes a few more minutes.

Arlo is an optional add-on to your Audalis phone system. When nobody on your team can pick up, Arlo answers, gathers the caller's details, answers questions using your business information, and, with your tools connected, can book appointments or transfer the caller to a person. Your team can always answer calls themselves.

Audalis drafts Arlo's setup from your business details when you create your workspace, so this takes a few more minutes after the [quick start](/help/getting-started/quickstart).

> [!NOTE]
>
> Every plan starts with one-time Arlo minutes. After they run out, Arlo is billed per minute or through a monthly minute pack. See [pricing](https://audalis.co/pricing).

**1. Teach Arlo about your business**

Arlo answers callers using what you tell it here.

1. In the sidebar, click **Arlo**. You'll land on the **Configuration** tab.
2. Check **Business Name** (how Arlo says your business name) and **Initial Message**. The initial message is the first thing callers hear.
3. Under **Services Arlo Can Handle**, check the services we imported from your website. Click **Add Service** for anything missing, such as "Water heater repair" or "Billing question".
4. Under **Voice & Language**, pick the voice callers will hear.
5. Click **Publish**. Your changes don't reach callers until you publish.

Want Arlo to answer detailed questions about pricing, service areas, or policies? Open the **Knowledge Base** tab and upload PDF or TXT files (up to 10 MB each).

> [!TIP]
>
> Starting from scratch? In **Configuration**, use **Generate from website** to draft your initial message, services, and voice in one go.

**2. Choose when Arlo answers**

1. In the sidebar, click **Arlo**, then open the **Settings** tab.
2. Under **Mode**, choose when Arlo answers:
   * **Human First** (default): your team's phones ring first. If no one answers, Arlo picks up.
   * **After Hours Only**: Arlo answers only outside your business hours.
   * **Always On**: Arlo answers every call.
3. Click **Publish**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> New workspaces have **Use Arlo when no one answers** turned on, so missed calls go to Arlo instead of voicemail. Turn it off in the same tab if you'd rather send missed calls to voicemail.

**3. Connect Jobber or your calendar**

Connecting your tools lets Arlo book, reschedule, and cancel appointments, and keeps your customer records in sync.

1. Go to **Settings** > **Connections**.
2. Click **Connect** next to **Jobber**, **Square**, **Google Calendar**, or **Outlook Calendar**, and sign in when prompted.
3. If you connected Jobber or Square, click **Arlo scheduling providers** to choose which one Arlo books into for each phone line.

None of these are required, but they give Arlo the most to work with.

**4. Make a test call**

1. From a different phone, call your Audalis number.
2. Let it ring. When no one picks up, Arlo answers.
3. Ask what a real customer would, such as "Can someone come out Tuesday to fix a leak?"
4. Hang up, then click **Inbox** in the sidebar. Your call appears with a summary of what was said.

Did Arlo give a wrong or vague answer? Go back to step 1, add the missing service or upload a document, click **Publish**, and call again.
